Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2008: Winners Announced
The prize winners for the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2008 were announced at the awards ceremony on the 4 November 2008 at the National Portrait Gallery. This years winners are: Lottie Davies, Hendrik Kerstens, Catherine Balet and Tom Stoddart.
The Godfrey Argent Award was awarded to Vanessa Winship. Read More

2008 Jerwood Photography Awards Winners Exhibition

The sixth annual Jerwood Photography Awards in collaboration with Portfolio Magazine and the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.

This exhibition showcases new work by five of the finest emerging photographers. The five winners are: Martina Lindqvist, Alice Myers, James Pogson, Kurt Tong and Nicky Walsh.The exhibition opens 7 November to 11 December 2008 at the Jerwood Space, Bankside, London. Read More

Shortlist announced for Deutsche Borse Photography Prize 2009
The Photographers’ Gallery announced the four shortlisted artists nominated for its annual Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. This year the Prize will take place at the Gallery’s new location of 16 –18 Ramillies Street, London.

The four shortlisted artists are: Paul Graham, Emily Jacir, Tod Papageorge and Taryn Simon. Read More

Breaking Up: Mark Dixon
Three years ago Mark Dixon became interested in a giant building in his home town of Ipswich. Originally the mill provided employment for generations of local families, and the demolition of the structure became interesting to Dixon; the artist could see the building from his house, and wanted to research and record the disappearing asbestos-ridden factory, along with the traces or histories of the people that worked there. Interloper: Dawn Woolley  
An exhibition showcasing recent works that explore the tensions between photography and it’s subject. Photographic sculptures depicting the artist are placed in the real world, enticing the viewer’s intimate gaze. The exhibition opens 5 December - 4 January 2009 at the South Square Centre, Bradford.

The Land of the Living Past: Rhodri Jones
The Land of the Living Past presents photographs by Rhodri Jones in North Albania over the period 1992 - 1999. Transmitted orally for generations, the laws of the ‘Kanun’ served for more than five centuries as the foundation of social behaviour and self government for the clans of Northern Albania. The exhibition opens 21 November - 7 January 2009 at Lighthouse, Wolverhampton. Read More

Proximity and defamiliarisation in art, film and photography
The latest in The Fruitmarket Gallery's series of group exhibitions curated by eminent scholars, writers and artists, Close-Up explores the defamiliarising effects of bringing a camera lens very close to its subject. Trans-historical and cross-generational, the exhibition brings together selected experiments in close-up film and photography. Dinu Li's beautiful photographic portraits depict residents from Manchester's many different communities using call centres to keep in touch with their friends and relatives abroad.

Clouds Decending

Leading photographer Jem Southam has been re-tracing Lowry’s footsteps along the Cumbrian coastline. Lowry spent a good deal of time observing and recording the industrial landscapes and harbour towns of this area.
