This is a series of photographs about artists’ relationships with books. I asked for the 20 most important books from their life so far and photographed them as a still life so that only the spines are readable. The images are printed at exactly life size and the bibliography and a statement written by the subject about why they made those choices is compiled into a book of texts to accompany the photographs. As social and cultural indicators these collections affirm the significance of books as objects for pleasure and knowledge and suggest a self-portrait as a literary still life.

freshfacedandwildeyed09 marks the second in the annual exhibitions that recognises the immense breadth and dynamism of graduate and post-graduate photographic work emerging from collleges and universities across the UK each year.
